HC extends stay on graft case against Hasina

Monday, 20 October 2008

The High Court (HC) Sunday extended a stay order on a Tk 30 million (3.0 crore) corruption case against former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, reports UNB.
Following a hearing on an appeal by Hasina challenging the legality of the case, an HC bench of justices Syed Mahmud Hossain and Qamrul Islam Siddiqui extended the stay order until a ruling on the appeal is given.
On Sept 16, the HC granted bail to Hasina and her cousin Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim in the case filed by businessman Azam J Chowdhury and stayed the proceedings of the case until Oct 19.
Hasina sought bail in the case on Sept 14, as well as a stay on the case proceedings in a petition challenging the legality of the case.
The HC had also issued a rule nisi on the government on August 28 to explain why the proceedings of the Tk 30 million (3.0 crore) extortion case against the former prime minister should not be declared illegal.
Businessman Azam J Chowdhury filed the case against Sheikh Hasina and her cousin Sheikh Selim on June 13, 2007, accusing them of accepting a Tk 30 million (3.0 crore) bribe from him.
The charge sheet in the case was submitted on July 24, 2007, also naming Hasina's younger sister Sheikh Rehana.
Trial of the case began on Jan 13, with charges being framed against all three at the metropolitan sessions judge's court.
