HC for domestic servant\\\'s rights

Tuesday, 1 July 2014

The High Court has asked why it should not issue a rule for steps to frame a law to protect the rights of domestic servants. The bench of Justices Salma Masud Chowdhury and Md Habibul Gani gave the order on Tuesday after an initial hearing on a petition. It ordered the secretaries of cabinet division, prime minister’s office, law ministry and women and children affairs ministry to come up with explanations within four weeks. Advocate Monjil Morshed filed the writ on behalf of rights group Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh. ‘There’s no law in Bangladesh to protect the rights of household helpers. They are not even included in the labour law. That’s why they are deprived of rights,’ Morshed said. ‘We have sought measures for a law in our petition. If the ministry wants it can include household helpers under the labour law or come up with a new law,’ he added, according to bdnews24.com.
