HC grants bail to Sheikh Selim in graft case
Tuesday, 16 September 2008
The High Court (HC) Monday granted bail for three months to detained ex-Health Minister Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim in an ill-gotten wealth case, reports UNB.
Granting the ad interim bail, a vacation bench, comprising Justice Mirza Hussain Haider and Justice Mamnoon Rahman, also stayed for three months the case proceedings.
The Anti-corruption Commission (ACC) filed the case with Ramna police station against Awami League (AL) stalwart Sheikh Selim on April 23, accusing him of amassing wealth worth 33.8 million (Tk 3.38 crore) illegally and concealing information about wealth worth Tk 223.9 million (22.39 lakh) in his statement submitted to the ACC.
On May 28 last year, the army-led joint forces arrested Selim. Later, he was implicated in a Tk 29.9 million (2.99 crore) extortion case filed by a businessman along with his cousin ex-Prime Minister and AL chief Sheikh Hasina, now abroad on parole for treatment.
Earlier, on August 14, another HC division bench denied interim bail to Selim in the extortion case. It, however, had issued a rule upon the government asking it to explain why the trial proceedings should not be declared unlawful.
Businessman Azam J Chowdhury filed the case at a time when there had been a purge under way in the interim period against former ruling politicians.
The case is now pending with a special court set up at high-security parliament building complex that deals with high-profile corruption cases.
Barrister Shafique Ahmed appeared for Sheikh Selim.
