HC hearing today in ACC's bid to revive case against Hasina

Wednesday, 25 July 2007

As part of the Anti-Corruption Commission's efforts to revive the corruption cases against detained former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, hearing on the Meghnaghat power plant case, stayed earlier, will be held today (Wednesday) in the High Court, reports UNB.
If the stay order is vacated by the High Court, the case will go to court for trial.
"It's no secret anymore that the ACC is trying hard to have the stay order on the cases against Sheikh Hasina vacated. If the stay order is vacated, the cases, the charge sheets of which were submitted earlier, would go to court straightway and investigations into the first information reports (FIRs) will resume," a competent source said Tuesday.
The date of hearing for vacating the stay order on the MIG-29 case is August 3 and the High Court will hear the frigate case on August 23.
The charge sheets of all the three cases had been filed by the now-defunct Bureau of Anti-Corruption (BAC) before the High Court imposed stay orders on the activities of the cases against the Awami League president.
At present, there are three graft cases pending with the Commission against Hasina and many others, including some former ministers, for their alleged corruption in constructing Bhasani Navo Theatre earlier named Bangabandhu Navo Theatre.
The dissolved BAC filed the three cases against Hasina and others with Tejgaon police station on March 27, 2002 for their alleged massive corruption and irregularities in the Bhasani Navo Theatre project under the AL government during 1996-2001.
