HC issues rule over Safe Food Act

The High Court issued Monday a rule asking the government to explain why directive would not be given for publishing a gazette notification for implementation of the Safe Food Act, 2013.
Responding to a public interest litigation writ petition (PIL), HC division bench comprising Justice Quazi Reza-Ul Hoque and Justice ABM Altaf Hossain issued the rule.
Secretaries of Commerce, Home, Food, Health, Industries and Law ministries, BSTI managing director, Inspector General of Police, Rab DG, DMP Commissioner have been made respondents to the rule, returnable in two weeks.
Issuing the rule, the HC also asked the Food Secretary to submit a progress report over the matter by June 16.
Although the Safe Food Act 2013 is in place, but there has been no gazette notification.  It needs the publication of an official gazette notification to make the Act effective.
