Wednesday, 10 February 2010

The High Court (HC) Tuesday issued a rule upon the government and others concerned to explain within 10 days why they should not be directed to properly maintain the sanctity and dignity of the central Shaheed Minar, a memorial for the 1952 language martyrs, in the capital, reports UNB.
Issuing the orders, the HC also asked the respondents to show cause as to why a direction should not be given to set up a museum on the Shaheed Minar precinct in order to inform the local and foreign visitors about the history of 1952 language movement.
Cabinet secretary, cultural affairs secretary, freedom fighters affairs secretary, Dhaka University vice chancellor, Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) mayor, chief engineer of PWD and its chief architect have been made respondents in the case.
A division bench comprising Justice M Momtazuddin Ahmed and Justice Naima Haider passed the orders following a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) writ petition filed by Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh (HRPB), a rights watchdog.
