HC lifts ban on broadcasting Tarique Rahman's speeches

FE REPORT | Friday, 23 August 2024

The High Court (HC) on Thursday lifted the ban on publishing statements of Tarique Rahman, the acting chairman of BNP, in all types of media and online platforms.
The HC bench of Justice Md Khasruzzaman and Justice Md Khairul Alam passed the order, after hearing on a writ petition, which was filed in 2015, in this regard.
During the Thursday's hearing, Supreme Court lawyer Nashreen Siddiqua Lina, who filed the writ, told the HC that she no longer wants to proceed with the case and prayed to declare the previously issued rule in this regard as legally void.
The court passed its order considering her appeal.
Tarique Rahman's counsel Barrister Kayser Kamal and others supported the decisions the judges took.
The writ, filed on January 6, 2015, during the rule of the Awami League government, sought HC directives to restrict publicising Tarique Rahman's statements.
Another HC bench on the following day ordered the government to immediately take steps to stop publicising Tarique Rahman's statements in the print, electronic and social media as long as he remains a fugitive.
It also asked the foreign secretary to inform in a month on what legal ground Tarique was staying abroad.
The HC also issued a rule asking the authorities concerned of the government and the media to explain in four weeks as to why publicising his statements should not be declared illegal.
