HC orders action against culprits
FE REPORT | Wednesday, 31 August 2022
The High Court on Tuesday asked the authorities concerned to take action against some culprits who sell fabrics and other raw materials imported under bonded-warehouse facility in the local market.
It called for an investigation into corruption allegations against different companies before taking legal action.
The HC bench of Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice Khizir Hayat passed the order after hearing a writ petition filed in this regard.
The court also issued a rule asking the authorities to explain in four weeks as to why the inaction of the respondents in taking action against the errant companies should not be declared illegal. It wanted to know as to why the respondents should not be directed to probe the allegations brought by the petitioner against the companies that are selling such fabrics in the local market.
Finance secretary, Anti-Corruption Commission chairman, National Board of Revenue chairman, customs commissioner, Bangladesh Bank governor and others have been asked to comply with the rule.
The HC also directed them to dispose of the allegations filed by the petitioner within three months and to submit a report to the court.
One Anwar Hossain of Chattogram filed the writ seeking remedy from the higher court over the issue.
Lawyer Manzill Murshid appeared in the hearing on behalf of the petitioner while deputy attorney general AKM Amin Uddin Manik represented the state.
Mr Murshid says some businessmen are not only committing corruption, but also imperiling the local textile industry through selling imported fabrics and other raw materials in the market.
