HC orders BTRC to resolve RanksTel issue in a week

Wednesday, 12 May 2010

The High Court Tuesday directed the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) to resolve within a week its notice over cancellation of the licence to operate RanksTel, a private telecom service provider, for its alleged involvement in illegal VoIP (voice over internet protocol) business. Disposing of its rule issued earlier upon a writ petition, the HC division bench headed by Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain passed the order, reports UNB.
The writ petition was filed by RanksTel, challenging the validity of the BTRC's action shutting down its operation. If the licence is cancelled, the HC directive asked the BTRC to appoint an administrator to run RanksTel until the criminal case against it is settled. On March 19, BTRC shut down all operations of RanksTel for its alleged involvement in illegal VoIP business.
Barrister Rafique-ul Huq and Advocate Anisul Huq appeared for RanksTel, while Deputy Attorney Genral Rajik Al Jalil stood for the government.
