HC orders schools to remain closed during Ramadan

FE REPORT | Monday, 11 March 2024

The High Court issued on Sunday a stay on the government decision to keep primary and secondary schools open during Ramadan.
The order was passed by the High Court bench comprising Justice K M Kamrul Kader and Justice Khizir Hayat following a writ petition filed by a student's guardian.
Senior Advocate AKM Faiz and Advocate Mahmuda Khanom represented the writ petitioner during the court hearing.
Lawyer Faiz stated, "On February 8, the government issued two notifications, specifying that primary schools would function for the first 10 days and secondary schools for 15 days during Ramadan. However, following our writ petition, the High Court has suspended the effectiveness of these notifications for a two-month period."
As a result of the High Court order, classes in primary and secondary schools will not continue during Ramadan, according to the lawyer.
The Directorate of Primary Education issued a notification on February 8, stating that primary schools would remain open for the first 10 days of Ramadan. On the same day, the Ministry of Education issued another notification indicating that secondary schools would remain open for the first 15 days of Ramadan.
Challenging these notifications, Shafiur Rahman Chowdhury, a guardian of a student, filed a writ petition with the High Court. The HC, upon hearing the petition, issued the stay order.
Rahman filed the petition citing difficulties for fasting students to attend classes and examinations, emphasising the importance of incorporating the practice of fasting among school-going children.
