HC seeks explanation over torture on Mizan

The High Court issued on Tuesday a three-prong rule asking the government to explain why disciplinary action should not be taken against the police personnel who committed physical and mental tortures on Mizanur Rahman, Baufal correspondent of Daily Prothom Alo, in custody, reports UNB.
Detained journalist Mizan is facing a criminal case on charges of beating a river police and obstructing him from perfrming his official duty.
After a brief hearing on a writ petition filed by Mizan's father, an HC division bench comprising Justice Quazi Raza-Ul Hoque and Justice Razik Al Jalil passed the orders.
The HC also asked the respondents to explain why physical and mental tortures upon Mizan in police custody should not be declared illegal and why direction should not be given to compensate Mizan from the salaries of the perpetrators.
Among others, the Home Secretary, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Patuakhali Superintendent of Police and Baufal thana officer-in -charge (OC) were made respondents to the rule, which is returnable in two weeks.
