HC seeks Rohingya voters' list by Aug 8

FE REPORT | Wednesday, 12 June 2024

The High Court (HC) on Tuesday sought a list of the Rohingyas, who have illegally become voters across the country, and are taking advantages as Bangladeshi citizens.
The Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), LGRD Secretary, Inspector General of Registration, and Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Cox's Bazar have been asked to submit the Rohingya voters' list by August 8 this year.
The HC bench of Justice Naima Haider and Justice Kazi Zinat Hoque passed the order after hearing a writ petition filed in this regard.
There were allegations that since 2016, at least 370 Rohingyas were given multiple fake documents, including birth registration and voter ID cards, in exchange for money. It was done in connivance with the chairman of Eidgaon Union Parishad of Eidgaon upazila under Cox's Bazar along with some powerful public representatives.
As no action was taken against the accused persons, Mohammad Hamid, a local resident of the area, submitted a written complaint to different government offices against 38 Rohingya voters. After an investigation, the upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) of Eidgaon upazila found the allegations as true.
A report, submitted to the district administration on 29 October 2023, found that 35 of the 38 voters were Rohingyas. Despite being asked to drop their names, the union parishad (UP) election schedule was announced keeping those Rohingya voters on the list.
