HC stays ACC cases against Tarique, Moudud, Nazmul for six weeks

Tuesday, 2 October 2007

The High Court (HC) Monday stayed for six weeks the proceedings of the case initiated by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) against detained former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia's eldest son Tarique Rahman for concealing information on wealth, reports UNB.
A division bench comprising Justice Shah Abu Nayeem Mominur Rahman and Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury passed the order following a writ petition.
The court also issued a rule upon the ACC and others to explain why its notice asking Tarique to submit his wealth statement to the anti-corruption watchdog should not be declared illegal.
However, the court did not pass any order regarding bail to Tarique as his counsel did not press for it.
On September 26, the ACC filed a case with Kafrul police station accusing Tarique, also senior joint secretary general of BNP, his wife Zubaida Rahman and mother-in-law Syeda Iqbalmand Banu of concealing wealth information.
The same court, upon two separate writ petitions filed by detained former Law Minister Moudud Ahmed and former Communications Minster Nazmul Huda and his wife Sigma Huda, passed similar orders in connection with the ACC cases asking them to submit wealth statement.
