HC stays for two months arbitration tribunal order
Thursday, 1 July 2010
The High Court (HC) Wednesday stayed for two months an arbitration tribunal order, apparently clearing the way for conducting the July 11 election of the Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters' Association (BKMEA) executive council for 2010-12, reports UNB.
The arbitration tribunal had scrapped the prescribed rules prepared by the government for the eligible voters of BKMEA to cast their votes for all the 27 posts of office-bearer.
A vacation division bench of the HC headed by Justice Moyeenul Islam Chowdhury passed the order upon a writ petition filed by M Faruk bin Yusuf, a candidate for the BKMEA election.
The bench also issued a rule upon the respondents to explain why the impugned order of the arbitration tribunal should not be declared illegal.
Emerging from the court, Advocate Abdul Baset Majumder, the counsel for Faruk, told reporters that there was no legal bar now for holding the July 11 election as the stay order remained in force for next two months.
Earlier, the BKMEA executive council election was scheduled for June 26 but it was deferred for unavoidable circumstances.
