HC stays proceedings for six months

Wednesday, 21 November 2007

The High Court (HC) stayed the proceedings of the liquor case against Sarwar Jamal Nizam, former lawmaker of the BNP, Tuesday for six months.
A Division Bench comprising Justice Syed M Dastagir Husain and Justice M A Hafiz also issued rule upon the government to explain why the case should not be set aside, reports UNB.
The court orders came after brief hearing of a petition of Nizam seeking to quash the case.
Nizam, brother of Navy Chief vice-admiral Sarwar Jahan Nizam, was accused under the stringent Special Powers Act of unauthorised possession of foreign liquor.
The army-led joint forces arrested Nizam on June 22 from near the Chittagong Club for his suspected involvement in various crimes.
They also seized his vehicle along with five cans of beer and three bottles of foreign liquor.
