The High Court (HC) Wednesday stayed for long three months the trial proceedings of two extortion cases filed against BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia's Adviser ASM Hannan Shah and his son.
A Division Bench, comprising Justice MA Matin and Justice M Abdul Hye, also issued rule upon government to explain why the cases "should not be quashed".
"The rule is made returnable in four weeks," stated the court order, issued following separate applications filed by the accused.
Hannan Shah and his son Shah Rezaul Hannan, now out of jail on bail granted by the HC after 10 weeks in custody, were arrested on May 14 from their old DOHS residence at Mohakhali in the city in connection with an extortion case.
Later, they were also sued in several other criminal cases. And they secured bail in those cases also from the HC.
