Sunday, 18 May 2014
The High Court has summoned former chief election commissioner (CEC) ATM Shamsul Huda on contempt of court charges. The bench of Justices Quazi Reza-Ul Hoque and ABM Altaf Hossain issued the suo moto rule on Sunday. Huda, who served as CEC during the last caretaker regime, will have to appear in the court on June 3. The rule was issued over a report published in an English daily newspaper headlined ‘No rule of law’ quoting the former CEC. The rule asked why contempt of court charges should not be issued against Huda for making such a remark. The home secretary, inspector general of police, commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, Dhaka deputy commissioner and Gulshan Police Station OC have been asked to reply to the rule within two weeks, according to a news agency.
