HC summons husband of Dipu Moni, 3 others
Wednesday, 23 April 2014
The High Court Wednesday summoned four people, including former Foreign Minister Dipu Moni’s husband Towfique Newaz, also a Supreme Court lawyer, to explain their wrong interpretation of an order issued by it.
They will have to appear before the court at 10 am on May 19 to have their say over the issue, according to a news agency.
The three others are Newaz’s associate SM Munir, Dhaka Education Board chairman Prof Taslima Begum and its controller SM Wahiduzzaman.
An HC bench of Justice Quazi Reza-Ul Hoque and Justice ABM Altaf Hossain passed the order after hearing a contempt of court petition.
The court also issued a rule asking six persons, including the four, to explain why contempt of court proceedings should not be drawn against them for misinterpreting its verdict.
The remaining persons who have been asked to respond to the rule are the Education Secretary and the Dhaka Education Board secretary.
Earlier on January 29 this year, the HC bench declared illegal the system of passing separately in objective, creative and practical exams of Physics, Biology and Chemistry at HSC level.
The order came following a writ petition filed by Farah Tasnim Raisa sitting for HSC examination last year from Dhaka City College.
The court also asked the education board chairman and its exam controller to take a step for re-evaluating the answer scripts of chemistry examination of Farah Tasnim Raisa.
Petitioner’s lawyer Ahsanur Rahman said though they applied for re-evaluation of chemistry examination of Raisa following the court’s order, the board did not respond to that.
Besides, Ahsanur said lawyers for the board Tawfique Newaz and SM Munir in the legal notice said, “There had been a big mistake in the court judgment.”
He also said they lodged a contempt of court petition with the HC for criticising the court order blatantly.
After hearing, the court summoned the four to appear before it in person.
