HC to hear Fakhrul's bail petition on Dec 7

FE REPORT | Tuesday, 5 December 2023

The High Court (HC) has set December 7 for hearing the bail petition placed by BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir in connection with a case filed over the attack on the residence of the Chief Justice in the city's Kakrail on October 28.
The HC bench of Justice Md Salim and Justice Shahed Nuruddin fixed the date on Monday after Fakhrul's lawyer Zainul Abedin asked for the hearing.
Mirza Fakhrul filed the bail petition with the HC on December 03 through his lawyers, after a Dhaka court on November 22 refused to grant him bail in the case.
Barrister Kayser Kamal, also a counsel for Mirza Fakhrul, said BNP secretary general was not involved in the vandalism of the Chief Justice's residence in any manner. He is an elderly person and moreover, BNP leader Shahjahan Omar, a co-accused of the same case, has already been granted bail, he added.
On October 29, the Detective Branch of police detained Fakhrul from his Gulshan residence around 9:25am. That day around 10:00pm, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Rashidul Alam sent him to jail, rejecting his bail prayer.
