HC upholds 14 years' jail for DIG Mizan in graft case

FE REPORT | Thursday, 29 February 2024

The High Court on Wednesday upheld the trial court's decision, affirming a 14-year imprisonment sentence for former Deputy Inspector General of police (DIG) Mizanur Rahman.
The trial court had issued this verdict last year in response to a case involving charges of accumulating wealth beyond a known source of income and concealing information in his wealth statement.
The High Court bench of Justice Md Kamrul Hossain Mollah rejected the appeal petition filed by Mizanur Rahman against the trial court verdict.
The Special Judge's Court-6 of Dhaka, presided over by Judge Monjurul Imam, had issued the initial verdict on June 21 last year.
The former DIG received sentences of six years, five years, and three years in jail for three distinct charges within the case. The court ruled that these convictions would run concurrently.
The case, filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on June 24, 2019, at its Integrated District Office in Dhaka, implicated Mizanur Rahman and three others.
The charges included amassing wealth totaling Tk 32.86 million beyond a known source of income and concealing information amounting to Tk 30.7 million in his wealth statement.
Barrister Mahbub Shafique, Advocate Parveen Sultana and Advocate Sifat Mahmud appeared in the court hearing on behalf of the former DIG, while lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan represented the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
Later Khurshid Alam Khan said trial court sentences declared for Mizanur Rahman are remaining as the HC has rejected his appeal petition.
Lawyer Parveen Sultana said that they will appeal against the HC verdict.
The trial court also sentenced Mizanur's wife Sohelia Anar Ratna, nephew Mahmudul Hasan, a suspended sub-inspector of police, and his brother Mahbubur Rahman to seven years in jail for abetting Mizan to acquire the illegal wealth.
