HC verdict on Muktijoddha Sangsad polls in district, upazila units stayed

Thursday, 3 June 2010

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court today stayed for a week the operation of a High Court (HC) verdict that declared the election schedule to hold the polls of district and upazila units of the Muktijoddha Sangsad illegal and without lawful authority, reports BSS.
Chamber Judge of the Appellate Division Justice M Mozammel Hossain issued the order of stay on a provisional leave petition filed on behalf of the state seeking stay of the operation of the HC verdict.
A HC bench on May 26 on a writ petition filed by two Freedom Fighters M Sahabuddin and Younus Miah declared notification of the election schedule to hold polls of district and upazila units of the Muktijoddha Sangsad as void and without lawful authority.
The writ petition challenged the authority of the election commission to declare the election schedule to hold polls in district and upazila levels.
