Headed to become a martyr

Thursday, 12 May 2011

The US government would be under an illusion if it thinks that its killing of Osama bin Laden will now lead to an American dictated stoppage of hostilities round the world. For the death of Laden could inspire more Ladens to crop up. The US has tried to erase the memory of Laden by dropping his body into the sea. In the calculation of US policymakers, the unknown watery grave of Osama will prevent admirers to throng to it and make it a shrine like that of a martyr. But how can they stop Laden from living in the memories and hearts of people? The unarmed Laden, who was shot dead in the head, is drawing sympathy from all. Even eminent persons in the West have said that it marked violation of both domestic as well as international law to kill an unarmed man on the point of surrender. He should have been brought before an international court for trial and duly charged in keeping with the requirements of the law. Shakeel Quasem Wari, Dhaka.
