Hearing on appeal over 2nd chance in DU test Aug 16

The Supreme Court on Thursday fixed August 16 for hearing on an appeal challenging the High Court order that rejected the writ petition against the decision of the Dhaka University (DU) authorities not to allow students to sit for the university’s admission test for the second time. A four-member bench of the Appellate Division, headed by Chief Justice SK Sinha, passed the order following an appeal against the HC order by admission seekers. Advocate Subrato Chowdhury, lawyer of the petitioners, Advocate ASM Mejbah Uddin, lawyer for DU, and attorney general Mahbube Alam were present during Thursday’s hearing. On July 8, the High Court rejected the writ petition against the decision of the DU authorities not to allow students to sit for the varsity’s entry test for the second time. As per the order, the students who have passed HSC examinations will not be able to appear at the DU entry tests for the second time. Later, the petitioners filed an appeal against the HC order that rejected the writ petition against the decision of the DU authorities. On October14, 2014, the DU authorities decided to allow only fresh successful HSC examinees to appear at its admission tests in a single year from the 2015-2016 academic session, aiming to create an equal opportunity for all the aspirants. Sixteen guardians filed the writ petition with the HC challenging the legality of the decision. On March 16, the HC issued a rule asking the authorities concerned to explain why the decision not to allow students to sit for the DU admission test for the second time would not be declared illegal, according to a news agency.
