Hearing on Aug 21 grenade attack case again deferred

Wednesday, 12 November 2008

The Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal here Tuesday again deferred the hearing on the August 21 grenade-attack case to November 17 upon a petition by the defence against the charge framing, reports UNB.
Judge Mohammad Masdar Hossain of the Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 refixed the date of hearing following a time petition of accused Abu Taher.
The court has framed charges against 22 accused, including ex-deputy minister Abdus Salam Pintu and HuJi Chief Mufti Abdul Hannan, for carrying out the grenade attack on Awamil League rally in front of the party office on Bangabandhu Avenue on August 21, 2004.
Two cases were filed for the grenade blasts that left at least 24 people dead, including AL leader Ivy Rahman, and scores injured. Party chief and former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina narrowly escaped the deadly attack, with her ears hurt by the hail of explosions.
Of the accused, 14 were arrested while the rest remained absconding.
