Hearings on state applications against Hasina resumes today

Sunday, 26 August 2007

After a nine-day recess, the Supreme Court (SC) resumes today (Sunday) the hearings on state applications for leave to appeal against the High Court (HC) orders granting bail to detained ex-PM Sheikh Hasina in two extortion cases, reports UNB.
On Aug 16, four state pre-appeal applications came up on the list for hearing before a six-member full hierarchy of the SC.
But the court adjourned the proceedings after a full-length hearing on two of the applications related to Hasina's bail granted by the HC in two extortion cases filed under the stringent Emergency Power Rules.
Of the rest two government applications, one seeks leave to appeal against another HC order that halted the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) notice asking the Awami League president to submit her wealth statement.
The other prays for leave to appeal against the HC-granted bail to business tycoon Abdul Awal Mintoo.
In the writs filed by Sheikh Hasina, detained since July 16, she has challenged the legality of the government action placing the two extortion cases against her under the emergency rules.
It, she contended, "snatched away her rights" to seek application for bail until the cases are resolved in trial courts.
