Heat persists despite rain

FE REPORT | Friday, 9 June 2023

The people of the capital city and its adjacent areas experienced a light rain on Thursday, which gave them relief to some extent from an unbearable heatwave over the last few days.
However, the drizzle could not curb the prevailing heat and high humidity completely.
In different parts of the country, people have been experiencing a heatwave for the last few days. It has caused enormous misery to their daily life.
The light shower started on Thursday morning and it soaked most parts of Dhaka. The city-dwellers faced some other difficulties due to the damp weather.
Some rickshaw-pullers said that the light rain gave them a little relief, but they were suffering due to the high humidity. Brushing aside the bad weather condition, they came out to earn their livelihood.
A 35-year-old rickshaw-puller of Dhaka, Abdul Hamid, said, “Light rain gave me a bit relief from the excessive heat. But, the hot weather still persists.”
Advocate Mahbubur Rahmanm, a resident of city’s Adabor area, said that he was delighted to see the cloudy weather in the morning and went out from his residence to get wet in the much-awaited rain.
However, he got upset as there was a light rain instead of a downpour.
Meteorologists predicted that people in Dhaka and elsewhere in the country might witness more rain on Friday. City people are likely to see a pleasant weather from Saturday.
People across the country are likely to get rid of scorching heat from June 15 or June 16, they added.
On Thursday, the highest temperature in the country was recorded at 38.6 degrees Celsius at Saidpur in Nilphamari district. The lowest temperature was recorded at 23.5 degrees Celsius at Kutubdia. Dhaka recorded 33.3 degrees Celsius on the same day.
Dhaka recorded 1.0 mm rainfall until 3pm on the day while the highest 98 mm rain occurred in Feni, the BMD officials said.
Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) meteorologist AKM Nazmul Hoque said Dhaka saw very light rain which could not curb the current heatwave that existed for the last few days.
To tame the temperature, continuous heavy monsoon rain is needed, he added.
A Met office bulletin issued on Thursday, said, “Rain or thundershower accompanied by temporary gusty or squally wind is likely to occur at many places over Chattogram or Barishal divisions on Friday.”
“Rain or thundershowers are likely to occur at some places over Dhaka and Khulna divisions and at one or two places over Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions with moderately heavy to heavy rainfall at places over Chattogram and Barishal divisions on the same day,” it forecasted.
UNB adds, “The country’s maritime ports have been advised to hoist the local cautionary signal 3 as deep convection is taking place over the North Bay, said the weather department on Thursday.”
