Heavy downpour damages croplands in Khulna

KHULNA, Oct 11: About 2372 hectares land of standing Aman crops and three hundred hectares land of vegetables worth about Tk 3 billion were damaged, due to incessant and heavy downpour for three days in 7 upazillas of Khulna and Bagerhat district, Agriculture Extension Department source said. They also said, about 4,000 shrimp ghers were also under water and shrimp worth Tk. 6 billion washed away in Bagerhat district.
AED sources said, standing Aman crops in 1,300 hectares of land in Paickgacha Upazila, 156 hectares of land in Dumuria Upazilla, 1050 hectares in Koyra Upazila and 40 hectares land in Rupsha Upazila were damaged due to heavy rainfall in the current month from Oct 6 to Oct 9. About 269 hectares land of vegetables were damaged in Dumuria Upazila and 38 hectares land of vegetables in Paickgacha Upazila of Khulna district.
AED will send a letter to the concerned authority about the assessment of damage by the recent heavy rainfall in the region.
On the other hand 15 villages have been flood affected due to erosion of river Kabotakkho near Oratala under Koyra Upazila. Hundreds of houses have been marooned. Local sources said 125 houses in village Gaburia, 50 in Katakhali, 60 in Harinkhola and 55 in North Modinabad were damaged.
No measures have been taken by the Water Development Board till Sunday. The Upazila Nirbahi Officers and local administrators however visited the affected areas.
