CHITTAGONG, August 5: Normal life was paralyzed as overnight heavy downpour in the port city accompanied by high tide water inundated low lying areas. Incessant rain caused untold sufferings to the people mainly due to water logging in most parts of the city. Dirty water has poured into several hundred houses in many over-crowded areas and market places under West Bakolia, South Bakolia, Chawkbazar, Kapashgola, Khatungonj, Chandgaon, Muradpur, Mohammadpur, Rajakhali, Halishahar and Agrabad CDA, a city corporation official admitted. Loading and unloading of bulk cargo including general consumer goods from 43 ships at the jetties and outer anchorage remained suspended due to rough weather in the sea, port officials said adding, unloading of containerized cargo in the berths remained operative. Radio control of Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) told this afternoon that the sea was still rough and no lightering vessel approached mother vessels laden with import cargo at the outer anchorage at Kutubdia to unload cargo. CPA secretary Syed Forhad Uddin said activities in 43 ships with general cargo remained suspended from Thursday evening and delivery of goods from the port was disrupted. Rain started Thursday afternoon but the city experienced heavy downpour in the evening which continued overnight and Friday forenoon. Weather office recorded 132.4 mm rainfall in 24 hours until 12 pm on Thursday. Most people in the city were confined in houses on Friday and had to suffer a lot as they came out by noon to say Jum'a prayers in the nearby mosques. Kitchen markets at Chawkbazar, Bakolia Boubazar, Reazuddin bazar and Bahaddarhat went under water and there were a few sellers and buyers unlike other weekly holidays. Executive Engineer of Chittagong City Corporation M Anwar Hossain stated that the low lying areas in the city have been inundated. "Onrush of rain water accompanied by high tide flowed through the low lying areas which has created water logging as the drains and canals were over-flooded," Hosain said.
