Heavy rains sweep city intermittently

Tuesday, 3 June 2008

A long spell of pre-monsoon shower pounded the city Monday, throwing the normal life in a terrible mess as many roads went under knee-deep rainwater, reports UNB.

Heavy rains swept the city intermittently throughout the day, causing immense trouble to the commuters.

The worst affected areas were Malibagh, Mouchak, Moghbazar, Shantinagar, Kakrail, Rampura, Basabo, Mirpur, Kalyanpur, Goran, Azimpur, Dhanmondi, Minto Road, Press Club, Motijheel, Fakirerpool, Secretariat, Bakshi Bazar and Lalbagh areas.

Thousands of commuters were stuck in traffic jams for hours on the waterlogged streets. To make the situation worse, a large number of vehicles went out of service in rainwater that swamped almost every road.

Heavy rain left things quite chaotic in the afternoon as homebound people frantically looked for transport for return from their workplaces.

Many had to wade through knee-deep water to reach their offices after the public transport system went out of gear. The CNG-run auto-rickshaws, taxis and rickshaws that were on the roads braving the rain charged outrageously high fares.

Vehicles slowed to a crawl and sometimes stood still on the major thoroughfares like Kazi Nazrul Islam Avenue, Mirpur Road and Tongi Diversion Road.

In the last 12 hours from 6.00 am, the Met Office recorded 85 mm of rainfall in Dhaka, the highest in the country.

They recorded 26 mm rainfall in Dinajpur, while 43 mm in Bogra, 10 mm in Chittagong, 57 in Rangpur, 22 in Sylhet, 54 in Shreemangol, 58, in Bhola, 21 in Maijdi, 10 in Comilla and 13 in Iswardi 13 from 3.00 pm to 6.00 am.

"The situation may improve Tuesday," an official of Dhaka Met office, told the news agency.

Meanwhile, the Met office in its monthly bulletin for June said the monsoon is likely to set in Southwestern Bangladesh on June 7 and one or two depressions may develop at the Bay in the month.

"The rainfall in June may rise 10-20 per cent allover the country," the bulletin said predicting that there is a possibility of normal flood at northeast and central regions of the country by the end of June.
