Help implement govt's economic visions:FM

FE Report | Sunday, 25 August 2019

Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen has sought cooperation from businesses to implement the government's economic visions.
He urged the business leaders to provide suggestions and extend cooperation in making the economic diplomacy initiated by the government a success.
The minister made the call while addressing a discussion marking the National Mourning Day, organised by the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) in the city on Saturday.
Dr Momen said, "We have aimed to boost exports and investment through economic diplomacy, and I seek the help of the business community for its successful implementation."
Bangladesh is on track to achieve its desired economic goals, thanks to the proper implementation of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's vision by the present government, he added.
In the last 10 years, he said, the country has achieved tremendous economic success under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who has implemented the economic and social policies of her father, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
The minister said Bangabandhu's economic policy focused on the well-being of the poor and it was aimed at removing the income disparity between the poor and the rich.
"Generally, rich-poor disparity increases in a country when it sees a rise in its economic growth, but Bangladesh is an exception to this," he said.
"And this has been possible due to the massive expansion of social safety network for the poor by our Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who follows her father's pro-poor economic policy," he added.
"Today, we are self-reliant on food, which was unthinkable a few years ago. And this has been possible due to the implementation of Bangabandhu's pro-farmer policy under which massive subsidies were provided to farmers," said the minister.
He also said Bangabandhu prioritised food security, industrialisation, education and governance for the development of the newborn country.
Bangabandhu nationalised 26,000 schools at a time and ordered restoration of the industries abandoned by the Pakistani owners, he added.
With a view to taking the administrative service and government service delivery system to the doorstep of the people, Bangabandhu introduced the district government system, said Dr Momen.
"But unfortunately, after his tragic death, the first thing the next government did was to scrap that system," he added.
Prime minister's private industry and investment adviser Salman F Rahman, FBCCI President Sheikh F Fahim, and former FBCCI presidents Mahbubur Rahman, Mir Nasir Hossain and AK Azad also spoke on the occasion.
