Helping the SIDR-affected for a longer period
Wednesday, 28 November 2007
IT is very encouraging that people from all strata of life have come forward to help the SIDR- affected people in the coastal belt of the country. With whatever ability they have they are trying to support these people. The efforts will obviously supplement the government's to provide food, shelter, health services and other necessities to the needy.
But the unbearable loss as the affected faced cannot be overcome in a day or weeks. They would need all the basic necessity of life for several months. If our interest in supporting the affected gradually diminishes with the passage of time, their sufferings will increase.
Keeping that in view, the government can introduce system of assistance to help the common people for a longer period. Right now, almost all working people have been donating their one-day's salary to help these people. This assistance needs to continue for the next couple of months. Besides, all with the ability can donate Tk 1.00 which can be collected by the existing banking network. All the commercial banks can open a special booth in all their branches to collect the donation on daily basis. We know that the donor countries are supporting the government to help these people come out of the situation. But as citizens of this country, we all have the responsibility to continue to help these people until they go back to their previous situation.
