Hide, skin prices low in Ctg

CHITTAGONG, Dec 01: The price of animal hides and skins was remarkably low in Chittagong this time as the market was controlled by a syndicate of middlemen, sources alleged.
Medium-size cow hides were sold at Tk. 300 to 500 per piece and goat skins Tk 200 to 300 at villages in South Chittagong, compared to almost double the prices last year.
Buyers said the cow hides in Chittagong were inferior to those of Dhaka and northern districts.
But the sellers said the quality of hides in Chittagong was better this time as a large number of bulls sacrificed this year were brought from the northern region.
More than 200,000 pieces of cow hides and 50,000 pieces of goat skins were sold Saturday in Chittagong, a wholesaler said.
"Wholesalers fixed the price of hide at Tk 30 per square feet. So the hide of a bull worth Tk 60,000 should cost over Tk 700, but we got Tk 450-500 only. It was due to the syndication of middlemen, who would sell the hides to the wholesalers," he said.
