GAIBANDHA, Nov 22: The seasonal 'fariah' and small scale hide traders of the district are facing huge losses due to lower prices of the hides of the sacrificial animals.
Concerned sources said the cow hides were being purchased and sold at rates between Taka 1700 and 2500 per piece (at TK 75 to 90 per square foot) depending on its quality and size till before Eid-ul-Azha.
Just a day before of Eid, the leaders of leather traders' association in Dhaka suddenly re-fixed the price of per square foot cow skin at Taka 50 and 60 that caused the loss of the seasonal fariah and small scale hide traders including aratdars at field level.
Cow hide which was purchased at TK 1500, will now be sold at TK 1200, said a trader.
Seasonal hide trader Manik Chand said he purchased about 40 pieces of skins of sacrificial animals during last three days on Eid occasion at an average rate of TK 2000 per piece.
He expressed fear of incurring huge losses as the price decreased by TK 500 to 800 per piece than the purchased rates.
M. Arshad Miah, an aratder of the town, said the number of sacrificial animals was lower this year as the people, particularly the rural ones, are passing a hard time now.
Over 900 pieces of cow hides were traded in last few days in the Palashbari Haat of the district, a big hide market in north Bengal, where big leather traders come from Dhaka to purchase the hides of cows, goats and buffalos on cash, he also said.
