Hides & skins decomposing after Eid

Wednesday, 8 October 2014

Hides and skins of animals sacrificed on Monday on the occasion of Holy Eid-ul-Azha are decomposing in different areas of Dhaka city since Tuesday. Raw hides of sacrificial animals have remained stockpiled at different spots in the capital as vehicles carrying the item are not being allowed to leave the city due to an embargo imposed by the DMP. Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Benazir Ahmed at a press conference on Sunday said that no rawhide-carrying vehicle would be allowed to leave the capital for three days following Eid to prevent the smuggling of the item. He, however, said vehicles carrying rawhides would be allowed to enter the capital during the time. Holy Eid-ul-Azha was observed in Bangladesh on Monday (Oct 6) when thousands of animals were sacrificed in the city and its suburbs, generating a huge amount of rawhides. And every year, countless hides are smuggled out of the country. Following announcement made by the DMP boss, the hide traders had warned that at least 40 per cent hides would be damaged due to heavy heat, long queue in traveling routes if stockpiled for three days after the Eid. Sources said the traders of country’s biggest hides collecting wholesale market in Posta in Lalbagh collected 0.2 million pieces of hides from Monday morning till Tuesday afternoon. The collection would be continued two more days, the traders said. Retail trader organisation Hide and Skin Retailer Merchant Association leaders said they had collected between 6 million and 7 million pieces of hide past year. But the traders feared that they could not be able to collect 0.3m pieces this year. They are purchasing the hide with Tk 100-110 for per sf which was fixed at Tk 70-75. Besides, the hides are also decomposing, they added, according to a private TV channel.
