High Court stays midway trial

Monday, 26 November 2007

The High Court (HC) stayed Sunday midway the trial proceedings of the graft case facing detained former BNP lawmaker Salahuddin Quader Chowdhury.
The case is now pending with the special court set up on the Jatiya Sangsad premises that tries high-profile corruption suspects, booked under the ongoing purge in the interim period, reports UNB.
Passing the order of stay, after a brief hearing of a writ petition, a Division Bench comprising Justice Shah Abu Nayeem Mominur Rahman and Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury issued a rule upon the Anti-corruption Commi-ssion (ACC), returnable in two weeks, to explain why the case "should not be quashed".
On June 13, the ACC filed a case with Ramna police station against SQ Chowdhury, also parliamentary affairs adviser to former prime minister Khaleda Zia, accusing him of concealing his wealth worth over Tk 11.70 million in his wealth statement submitted to the ACC.
He amassed wealth worth nearly Tk 95 million beyond known sources of income, the ACC alleged in the case.
