High prices encouraging farmers

BOGRA, Nov 12: High price are inspiring the farmers of Bogra to bring more agricultural land under chilli cultivation. As a result nearly double the area of the target came under chilli cultivation this year and a bumper production of chilli. is expected in the district.
According to District Agriculture Extension office, 7,492 hectares of land came under chilli cultivation whereas the target was 4,857 hectares. High prices of chilli in the local markets are encouraging farmers to increase chilli cultivation.
Generally chillies are cultivated in the Jamuna. river belt areas of Bogra, where lands are sandy. As such the major portion of chilli is cultivated in the four upazilas of Jamuna. river belt areas -- Sonatola, Sariakandi, Gabtali and Dhunat. Nearly 2800 hectares of land come under chilli cultivation in Sariakandi upazilas alone.
This year production target of chilli is 7286 tonnes. If farmers get all logistic support such as fertiliser and insecticides then it is expected that the yield will be nearly double the target.
