High-yield garlic shows the way in Magura*****

MAGURA, Apr 27: Cultivation of BARI 1 and BARI 2 garlic has raised hope among the farmers of Magura. Agriculture Extension Department (DAE) Magura informed that in the current season a total of 650 hectares of land was brought under BARI 1 and BARI 2 garlic. Cultivated in four upazila of this district, harvesting of garlic is close to completion. The total production will stand at 4986 metric tonnes. Bangladesh Agriculture Research Institute is the originator of BARI 1and BARI 2 garlic. The farmers of village Ambalshar, Goaghpur and Nabagram are showing much interest in the cultivation of these varieties. Besides these garlic is also being cultivated in village Gangnalia, Joka, Malithia and Langanbandh of this district. DAE sources informed, the production of these 2 varieties is 80 to 90 maund per acre while our common variety production is 35 to 40 maund per acre. Moreover production cost of BARI 1 and BARI 2garlic is less than that of the common variety. Every year the demand for garlic in our country is 2.61 lakhs metric tonnes while our production is only 1.45lakhs mt. If the cultivation of BARI 1 and BARI 2 garlic gains popularity we shall be able to export garlic rather than import. Protest against land acquisition Another massage adds: The decision of acquiring agricultural land is not only inhuman but also in contravention of government rules. The decision will bring tribulation for 40 agriculture dependent families, said the speakers in a meeting in Shimulia village arranged by Shinulia Mouzar Krishi Jomi Rokha Committee Tuesday. Bazlul Karim Rakhu and Jahangir Kabir spoke in the meeting. They also put up barricade on Dhaka- Khulna highway for half an hour in Shimulia area near Magura town. They also formed a human chain at the same place protesting the decision of acquiring agriccultural land. It may be mentioned PWD Ministry has taken a decision to acquire 50 bighas of land in Shimulia village to build residence for the people of poor income group. Garlic harvest in Nilphamari Our correspondent from Nilphamari reports: Harvesting of garlic is almost complete in Nilphamari district and the farmers are already marketing the product in huge quantity. Sources said at the hoarders are purchasing garlic to store and sale it when the price would go up. Garlic is now being sold in the market at Tk.3000 per maund. The production of garlic this year has been quite satisfactory as the climate for the cultivation of garlic was favourable. Last year the price of garlic was at Tk.8000 per maund which encouraged the farmers to bring more land under garlic cultivation. Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources said this seasons garlic cultivation target was in 992 hectares of land and production target was 5952 tonnes but the production is expected to far surpass the target.
