Higher supply helps significantly slash summer vegetables prices

Prices of summer vegetables reduced significantly on Friday compared with a week ago amid increase in supply from the growing hubs, traders said.
Onion, chilli prices reduced, garlic increased slightly, while other commodities remained stagnant on the day.
Summer vegetables like snake gourd, bitter gourd, sponge gourd (dhundal), ridge gourd (jhinga), pointed gourd, okra, long bean prices reduced by 50-80 per cent in a week, traders at different kitchen markets said.
Per kg snake gourd (chichinga) was sold at 30-35 per kg, which was Tk 60-65 per kg seven days back. Bitter gourd price reduced to Tk 40-45 from Tk60-70 seven days back.
 "Price of vegetables reduced significantly in the wholesale market, which helped ease the price. Per maund (40 kg) okra was Tk1,750-1,800 last week which has reduced to Tk1,080-1,120 on Friday at Karwan Bazar," Anisur Rahman, a retailer at Banalata Kitchen market under New Market area, said.
Md Rahman Ali, a wholesaler at Rayer Bazar in the city told the FE that a huge volume of vegetable started to enter city from Rangpur, Rajshahi, Jessore, Comilla and Narshindi districts which helped reduce prices.
The prices will reduce further in the coming weeks, he said.
Prices of other vegetable including tomato, brinjal, carrot, and cucumber also went down by 10-15 per cent in a week.
Moringa (shajna) was the expensive vegetables that vended at Tk Tk110-120 per kg on the day while lemon price also increased, with four pieces selling at Tk20-24.
Onion prices reduced slightly by Tk2-3 per kg as supply increased. Local onion was sold at Tk26-28 and imported at Tk22-24 per kg.
Chilli price reduced by nearly 40 per cent and was sold at Tk40-45 per kg on the day while garlic price also increased by 10 per cent this week compared to that of last week.
Rice and fish (riverine) prices were static maintaining higher prices.
Prices of other major commodities including meat, pulses, edible oil, milk, egg, sugar, salt, flour, spices, tea etc were stable last week.
