Two Brothers
On HBO Movies India Sunday at 9-30 pm
French filmmaker, Jean-Jacques Annaud, is best known for his films on abstract subject matter like "Quest for Fire," "Seven Years in Tibet," "Enemy at the Gates" and "The Name of the Rose." On rare occasions however, Annaud takes a break from the profound. "Two Brothers" is his second foray into the wildlife genre after the highly successful "The Bear." "Two Brothers" is a heartwrenching tale about two tigers that are separated as cubs and taken into captivity. In the beginning, Kumal and Sangha live and play amongst the ancient temple ruins in a Southeast Asian jungle. A well-known explorer, Aidan McRory (Pearce, Memento, LA Confidential), who represents all the excesses of British Colonialism, kills an adult male tiger during one of his lavish hunting parties. However, McRory takes pity on the cub, Kumal and saves it. Sangha, meanwhile, is discovered by Raoul (Highmore, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Finding Neverland). Eventually, through a series of events, both Kumal and Sangha are tragically reunited, not as brothers but as enemies, and forced to fight one another for sport.
