BRAHMANBARIA, July 8: Abnormal hike in paper prices is seriously hampering printing business in the district, said sources.
Prices of various types of paper such as newsprint, whiteprint, thin-paper, off-set and Karnaphuli paper have increased beyond imagination.
According to sources, an artificial crisis of paper, created by a section of dishonest traders, is mainly responsible for such price hike, sources added.
In the circumstances, the press-owners have urged the interim caretaker government to take immediate steps in this connection.
Meantime, dumped plastic bottles and containers have become a threat to the environment in the district.
Everyday a large number of plastic bottles, containers and cans are dumped on the roads and footpaths by people who are not conscious of the consequences of such actions.
Besides, passengers of motorised vehicles take mineral water and soft-drink bottles during their journey and later, they dump those on the streets here and there.
Later, these dumped materials become a serious threat to the environment as strong stinking smell comes out of these rubbish heaps during the rainy season.
Local people have therefore sought immediate government intervention in this connection.
