Hili land-port revenue rapidly falling

JOYPURHAT, November 7: The government is losing revenue from Hili land-port, as export-import activities are alarmingly reducing there, which might even lead to closure of the port, said sources.
Local exporters and importers and C and F agents said in spite of providing adequate facilities, the traders are gradually discontinuing their business involvement with the country's second largest land-port.
They alleged that traders of neighbouring Sonamasjid and Burimari land-ports are providing some unfair facilities to the exporters and importers, and so they are increasingly using those ports than Hili.
However, one member of Hili Land-port Exporter-Importer Advisory Association said the traders had been widely using the port since 1987 from its beginning. Though the land-port has achieved its revenue targets, modern infrastructure facilities have not been developed there. He also predicted that if the facilities are not provided soon, the land-port might even be closed in future.
Customs superintendent of Hili land-port Abdul Ohab said during previous four to five months everyday on average 380 to 400 Indian trucks with imported goods came to the port, but presently, the number is reduced to 50 or 60.
