CHITTAGONG, Aug 13: Hilsa fishes are still beyond the buying capacity of most of the buyers due to their yet-exorbitant prices in the local markets.
Hilsa fishes are now being abundantly caught in the Bay of Bengal for the last few weeks, and their supply is sufficient in the markets of the port-city.
However, a large number of Hilsa is being smuggled to neighbouring India through different routes despite the government's declaration of ban on export of the same, sources said.
As a result, the price of the delicious food item, which was supposed to come down remarkably, did not fall enough.
The dream of the common people of appreciating the taste of the national fish still remains unfulfilled as the price of the same is yet high and, therefore, they cannot derive expected benefit from the ban on export.
While a one-kg Hilsa was sold at Tk 400 to Tk 450 per kg a few days back, it is now being sold at Tk 250 to Tk 300 per kg due to its abundant supply.
Meanwhile, on visiting different markets of the port-city, it has been observed that the high-priced hilsa cannot meet the demand of the general buyers.
