Historic June 7 today

Monday, 7 June 2010

The ruling Awami League (AL) will observe the historic June 7 today (Monday) to commemorate the six-point movement, which was launched 44 years ago demanding autonomy for the then East Pakistan.
President M Zillur Rahman and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina have issued separate messages on the occasion.
Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had announced his historic six-point political and economic programme in Lahore in 1966, aiming to attain greater autonomy for the then East Pakistan.
President Zillur Rahman in his message said the six-point movement is a milestone in the long process of country's liberation war.
"Bangladesh's independence lies in the six-point declaration against the continuous disparity and long running repressive policy of the then West Pakistani rulers. I pay deep respect to the founder of the nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman as the six-point movement encouraged us to build a hunger and poverty free enriched Bangladesh," the President mentioned.
In her message, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said, "The June 7 is a historic day. The six-point movement had speeded up the liberation war."
The AL has chalked out elaborate programmes to mark the day.
