Historic May Day observed in dists

KHULNA, May 2: The historic May Day was observed here in Khulna as elsewhere in the country with renewed pledge to uphold the rights of the working people. On this day 127 years ago, workers of Chicago's Hay market shed their blood to establish their rights for an eight-hour working period.
In our country, this year's May Day is an unusual day as the whole nation is shocked over the loss of lives of hundreds of garment workers in the tragic collapse of Rana Plaza building in Savar.
In Khulna different political parties and its front organisations, journalists union and different other bodies observed the day through separate programmes which included holding of rallies, symposium and discussion meetings and cultural functions.
In observance of the day a discussion meeting was held at joint labour director office premises Wednesday where Khulna City Corporation Mayor Talukder Abdul Khaleque addressed as the chief guest.
Gopalganj
Our Gopalganj correspondent says: The historic May Day was observed here with a renewed pledge to uphold the right of the working people.
On the occasion different political parties, trade unions, labour and professional bodies organised elaborate programmes.
The programmes included rallies, processions, discussion meeting and cultural function.
In the morning Gopalganj District Paribahan Sramik Union brought out a procession chanting slogans which paraded the main roads of the town.
On the occasion of the day, Gopalganj district Construction Sramik Union organised a discussion meeting at Pourapark ground in the town.
Md. Sabur Ali, president of Construction sramik union Gopalganj district presided over the meeting.
Tangail
Our correspondent in Tangail reports: Historic May Day was observed in Tangail and elsewhere in the country with a renewed pledge to uphold the rights of the working people. On this day 127 years ago, worker of the Chicago Hay market shed their blood to establish their rights for an eight-hour working period.
In Tangail, different political parties, trade unions, labour and socio-cultural organisations chalked out elaborate programmes including hoisting of national and labour organisation flags atop the offices of the trade unions and labour organisations.
