Historic May Day observed with fanfare in districts

KHULNA, May 2: Historic May Day was observed in Khulna with renewed pledge to uphold the rights of the working people. On this day 125 years ago, workers of Chicago Hay market shed their blood to establish their rights for an eight-hour working period. In Khulna different political parties and their front organisations, journalists union and different other bodies observed the day through taking up separate programmes which included holding of rallies, symposium and discussion meetings and cultural functions. In observance of the day a discussion meet was held at Khulna Public Hall Saturday where Khulna City Corporation Mayor Talukder Abdul Khaleque addressed as the chief guest. Later a colourful rally was brought out in city main roads led by KCC Mayor Talukder Abdul Khaleque which started from Khulna Circuit House Maidan and ended at Public Hall premises. Labour leaders, workers from different mills and representatives from mass communication took part in the rally. Sramik League, Sramik Dal, Sramik Party, trade union centres, Khulna Union of Journalists, and Metropolitan Union of Journalists held discussion meetings on the significance of the day. Tangail Our Correspondent from Tangail adds: May Day was observed in Tangail with a pledge of protecting the rights of workers of the country. Labour department Tangail, non government voluntary organisations jointly arranged the programme. A colourful rally was bought out with banners, festoons from Tangail Shaheed Smrity Pouro Udyan in the morning. The rally parade main streets of the town. After rally a discussion meeting was held at Tangail Shaheed Minar. Leaders of the labour associations addressed in the meeting. Habiganj A correspondent from Habiganj reports: Historic May Day was observed at Habiganj in a befitting manner. District administration, Jatiyo Sramik League, and several labour organisation arranged various programme for the day. A coluorful rally paraded the main road of the Habiganj town organised by district administration Sunday, led by member of the parliament Advocate Md. Abu Jahir. After the rally a discussion meeting was held at Habiganj circuit house hall room. Deputy commissioner Mahmud Hasan presided over the meeting. On the occasion different political parties, trading men and professional bodies organised elaborate programmes. The programmes included rallies, processions, discussion meeting and cultural function. In the morning gopalganj district Motor Sramik Union brought out a red flag and procession which paraded the main roads of the town. After the rally a discussion meeting was held at Quadanga old bus terminal in the city, at 11.30 am. Rajshahi BSS adds: The historic May Day was observed in the Rajshahi and other adjoining areas here Sunday with a fresh vow to uphold the rights of working people together with maintaining harmony between labors and owners. Various political parties, trade unions, labour and socio- cultural organisations had chalked out elaborate programmes including hoisting of national and labour- flags atop the offices of trade unions and labour organisations, discussion meetings, rallies and cultural functions marking the day. In observation of the day, district administration and Divisional office of the Labour Directorate jointly organised a post-rally discussion at Zila Parishad auditorium in the morning. With Deputy Commissioner-in-Charge Subal Bose Moni in the chair, Mayor of Rajshahi City Corporation AHM Khairuzzaman Liton addressed the discussion as the chief guest. Termed the working class as the 'driving force' of the national economy Mayor Liton said, "Development of a nation is not possible without the development of condition of the working class." He also laid emphasis on greater unity among the working people to establish their legal rights. Earlier, a colorful procession paraded several streets in the city before being converged into the discussion venue. Besides, local units of bus, truck, minibus, tempo and mishuk labourers unions took out separate processions which paraded the main city streets. The procession was followed by discussion and milad mahfil at their offices. In observance of the day 'Anushilon Nattiya Shilpi', a cultural organisation, organised a discussion on the premises of Court Shaheed Minar Saturday morning. The leaders and members of the Imarat Nirman Shramic Association of Bangladesh (INSAB) brought out a procession that paraded the city streets which was followed by a milad mahfil at its office in the afternoon on the day. Faridpur BSS adds: Historic May Day was observed here Sunday as elsewhere in the country and world with a renewed pledge to continue the global struggle for establishing the rights of the working people. The district administration and organisations brought out a procession in the town in the morning which paraded the road from Janata Bank Square to Kabi Jasimuddin Hall to end in a discussion meeting. Additional Deputy Commissioner [Education] Bashir Ahmed chaired the discussion. Addressing the occasion, the speakers said the present government is very much labour friendly and mentioned that the deprivations of the garment's workers have gone with the sincere initiatives of the government. Deputy Commissioner of Faridpur Helaluddin Ahmed speaking as the chief guest said state sponsored May Day was never observed here so colorfully reflecting the positive and cordial attitude of the present government. Jatiya Sramik League held a big rally in the afternoon at Alipur Crossing to mark the day. Organisation President Akkas Hossain chaired the function.
