Hoggard in as England bowl at Chester-le-Street

Sunday, 17 June 2007

Michael Vaughan, the England captain, has won the toss and put West Indies into bat at Chester-le-Street, as the fourth Test finally gets underway on the second afternoon, reports Cricinfo.
Three-and-a-half sessions have been lost due to rain so far. After Friday's washout - play abandoned without a ball being bowled - the weather was less threatening this morning, giving hope of a prompt start to play.
However, so heavy had the rain been in the north of England over the past few days, that The Riverside's outfield was severely saturated.
After an early lunch at 12.30 pm Saturday, the umpires made their second inspection at 1pm and deemed that the bowlers' run-ups had dried out sufficiently.
Unsurprisingly, Vaughan chose to make the most of the humid and muggy conditions and inserted West Indies after winning the toss.
As expected, England ushered Matthew Hoggard back into the team having fully recovered from his groin injury, at the expense of Liam Plunkett whose continual waywardness is a cause of genuine concern.
For West Indies, Darren Sammy misses out through injury and is replaced by Marlon Samuels, while Daren Powell is in for Jerome Taylor.
