CHITTAGONG, Nov 9: Green construction is the way ahead for building industry to move towards achieving sustainable development taking into account the environmental, socio-economic and cultural issues.
It involves issues such as design and management of buildings, materials and building performance, energy and resource consumption within the larger orbit of urban development and management.
The current unplanned urbanisation in the country has motivated Holcim Bangladesh, a leading cement manufacturing industry, to initiate a programme titled 'Holcim Green Built Bangladesh Contest' with some effective projects and ideas that will lead to a planned development for the betterment of the next generations.
Rajnish Kapur, managing director and CEO of Holcim Bangladesh, gave a brief presentation on the issues that motivated Holcim to come up with such an initiative for development of the country at a seminar held at a city hotel Sunday.
He said it is a national level contest and is open to all Bangladeshi nationals above 18 years of age. The total prize value of the contest is Tk 2.0 million (20 lakh) and under two categories- Built Projects and Idea Projects.
Earlier, the campaign was organised in Rajshahi and Khulna. Sylhet is the next district targeted for the campaign, organisers said.
An advisory board headed by BRAC University Vice-Chancellor Jamilur Reza Chowdhury was constituted to conduct the contest.
While addressing the seminar as the chief guest, Prof Shyamol Kanti Biswas, vice chancellor of Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology, said the concept of green construction is highly applicable to Bangladesh because of massive increase in population, development of high-density urban centres and change of socio-economic landscape, and massive planning and construction of the towns and cities in the city.
Architect-planner Roxana Hafiz of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, and Brand Support Manager of Holcim Farah Shahrookh Raza also spoke on the occasion.
