Holy Ashura being observed

FE Online Report | Tuesday, 4 November 2014

The holy Ashura is being observed in Bangladesh and elsewhere in the Muslim world with due respect and religious solemnity. The Holy Ashura is observed on the 10th of Muharram, the 1st month in Arabic calendar, to commemorate the Karbala tragedy in which Hazrat Imam Hossain (RA), grandson of Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH), along with his family members and followers embraced martyrdom. The day is a public holiday. On this day in the Hijri year 61, Hazrat Imam Hossain (RA) along with his family members and close relations were entrapped by Yazid’s forces and later embraced martyrdom in Karbala after battling for long hours. About 1332 years back, Imam Hossain (RA) had to make supreme sacrifice to uphold the spirit of Islam and the teachings of The Prophet. President M Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina gave separate messages on the eve of Holy Ashura paying deep respects to Hazrat Imam Hossain (RA) and other martyrs of Karbala. Different religious organisations have chalked out various programmes to observe the day in a befitting manner. Bangladesh Betar, Bangladesh Television, private TV channels and private radio stations will air special programmes while newspapers have published supplements highlighting the significance of the day.
