Homage to martyrs of Liberation War

RANGPUR, Dec 18: The Victory Day was celebrated here in Rangpur in a befitting manner Thursday, recalling the supreme sacrifices made by millions of people and taking oath to build an exploitation free society.
In Rangpur the day began with 21 gun salutes. Thereafter Rangpur divisional commissioner Jasimuddin Ahmed, Deputy Commissioner of Rangpur, BM Enamul Haque, Police Super Saleh Md. Tanvir, representatives of different political parties, socio-cultural organizations and educational institutes placed floral wreaths at the central martyred memorial in the town and paid tributes to the heroes of the liberation war.
A colourful march past by Police, Ansar, VDP and children youth organisations took place at Rangpur stadium.
Later, a discussion meeting was held at local public library ground. Among others political leaders, government officials, local elites and journalists took part in the discussion meeting.
The day's other programmes included photo exhibition and cultural shows and special diets were served in the hospitals, jail and orphanages.
Besides, different political partiers cultural organisations educational institutions observed the day separately.
Gopalganj
Our correspondent from Gopalganj reports: The 40th Victory Day was observed in Gopalganj in a befitting manner Thursday.
The celebration began at 12:01 am by firing 31 gunshots, the national flag was hoisted by deputy commissioner (DC) Sheikh Yousuf Harun just after sun rising. Different political parties, freedom fighters and other organisations placed floral wraths at the Independent monument of Gopalganj town.
A discussion meeting and cultural function were held on Victory Day at Shilpokla Academy premises in Gopalganj town.
Earlier at 11am a Milad Mahfil and reception function were held with freedom fighter families to the honor of martyrs at Badda Bhumi premises in Goplaganj town by district administration.
National Flag hoisted in Government and public buildings, Special prayers were arranged in Mosques, Mandhirs and Pagodas, peace and welfare of the Nation and country.
Khulna
Our correspondent adds: The 40th Victory Day was observed here in Khulna as part of the country wide celebration with a renewed pledge expecting peace, progress and prosperity through elevating poverty of the country.
The day programme was heralded with the booming of thirty one gun salute at the local collectorate building premises and placing of floral wreathes at the altar of the of the Shahid Smriti Saudha at Gollamari Thursday. National flags were hosted at all public and private buildings.
Commissioner of Khulna Division Moshiur Rahman formally hoisted the national flag at the Khulna stadium ground in the morning and attended a combined march past by boys scouts, girls guides, Ansars, VDPs, BNCC, students local educational institutions. Special prayers were at all mosques and other places of worship for the continued peace, progress and prosperity of the nation. Improved diet was served to jailkhana, hospitals and orphanages in the city.
District administration accorded reception to the freedom fighters programme at the Deputy Commissioner Conference room where the KCC Mayor Talukder Abdul Khaleque was present as chief guest.
Discussion meetings on the significance of the day were held under auspices of different political, socio-cultural and professional organisations in the city. Khulna University put up a day long programme at the university campus with laying floral wreaths at the Gollamary Smrithi Saudha at the mid-night.
Documentary films on liberation war was exhibited in cinema halls at free of cost and painting competition were arranged in connection with the observance of the day. A discussion meeting on liberation war and self sufficiency in all fields of national life was held at the local Zia Hall followed by a cultural function
Regional daily newspapers brought special supplement on this occasion while Khulna station of Radio Bangladesh put up special programmes marking the day.
