RANGPUR, Oct 22 (UNB): Education and Commerce Adviser Hossain Zillur Rahman Wednesday reaffirmed that the national elections would be held as per the roadmap of the Election Commission beyond doubt.
"There is no confusion about holding the national elections timely-we are making every step to that end gradually," Dr Hossain Zillur Rahman stated this while speaking at an inaugural function of the much-awaited Rangpur University at the Teachers' Training Centre in this northern district town Wednesday.
Rajshahi divisional commissioner Hafizur Rahman presided over the function.
Education Ministry joint secretary AZM Shafiul Alam and chief engineer Shahjahan Patwari also spoke, among others, on the occasion.
The Education Adviser also inaugurated the academic activities of the university and expressed his hope that the new public university would help in rearing skilled human resources in the country.
The curricular activities for 2008-2009 sessions had been launched by the university at the unused buildings of Teachers' Training College with Honours courses in six subjects - Bangla, English, Mathematics, Computer Science, Economics and BBA - under four faculties.
Dr M Lutfar Rahman, former professor of Computer Science at Dhaka University, had been appointed Vice-chancellor of Rangpur University.
Official sources said the government acquired 75 acres of land in the compound of Carmichael College for constructing the university complex.
The plan for setting up the university was announced by Chief Adviser Fakhruddin Ahmed on February 2 this year after a Cabinet meeting in Rangpur.
